Based on the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades, this song was exploring the dichotomy of good and evil with a new perspective; I was trying to portray Hades as the protagonist by it being in first person, and show his weakness and discomfort in the land of the living. The last part is meant to convey his desperation and hopelessness (which is why it sounds sort of off-kilter with the rest of the song, because typically as a god he is meant to be perpetually strong etcetera etcetera).
lyrics
Rising from the depths, I hope I seem alright to you
The air is so bright here, even when it’s night here, it makes me feel blue
‘Cause I prefer the darker side of the spectrum
What a disappointment, this is not what I was expecting
Choking on the pollen, I’m drowning in your flower crown
You may be princess here, but you’d be my queen below the ground
Darling, take my hand, I’m bringing you home to Neverland
We’ll be surrounded by people who never age
Persephone, I built your throne, of sentiment and human bone
A beautiful life of prose just turn the page
Don’t escape me now, you are the only thing I see
There’s a gaping hole shaped just like your soul inside of me
But there are voices asking me if I’m what you are worth
Would it destroy you to be kept underneath the earth?
Choking on the pollen, d-d-drowning in your flower crown
You may be princess here, but you’d be my queen below the ground
Darling, take my hand, I’m bringing you home to Neverland
We’ll be surrounded by people who never age
Persephone, I built your throne, of sentiment and human bone
A beautiful life of prose just turn the page
Golden flames will encase your head, your new crown as the ruler of the dead
Strike fear into the hearts of enemies just by taking a breath, you can do as you please
Can do as you please
